CLEAN ROOM ACCESS PROTOCOL PDF Print

•1)      After completing the site registration, the first thing a new student should do is sign up for the next Environmental Health & Safety Training Class:  Laboratory Safety/Chemical Hygiene/Hazardous Waste Training. Please go to this link to look up dates and times: http://ehs.columbia.edu/TrainingSchedule.html.

•2)      Then the student should read and study the Clean Room Rules and Safety Manual. There will be a test in order to confirm that the new research member has a good knowledge of the material. Please read and study this PDF file before attempting the test. You will have two chances to complete the test with a passing grade before having to meet with the Clean Room Staff for further training. When you feel that you know the material, take the test here * After completing and passing the online test and attending the required EH&S Training, please contact John Hilton for Chemical and Wet Bench Certification. Contact John (JP) via e-mail: jph2134@columbia.edu

•3)      In the meantime (while working on the two aforementioned steps), the new user should obtain a mentor from their research group and start to train with them on Equipment, Processes, Rules, and Safety within the Clean Room Environment. You may enter the Clean Room when accompanied by a mentor from your Research Group. In addition you may enter the Clean Room with a member of the Clean Room Staff if needed for training or other purposes. Until you have completed steps 1 and 2 of this protocol you are not permitted to enter the Clean Room under any other circumstances. If you have any questions or queries about this or any other Clean Room rules please contact Geoff Goold: gg2332@columbia.edu

•4)      After a new research member has completed both of the first two steps, they will be able to gain access to the Clean Room and some of the equipment like microscopes and the fumed hoods. However in order to gain access to the majority of the Clean Room Equipment, the new user will need to be certified on that specific piece of equipment in order to gain access with their Columbia ID Card. For certification and more information or help in getting certified on the equipment as well as available processes in the Clean Room, please contact Linus Fetter: laf2144@columbia.edu.

  • 5)       After being certified on a piece of equipment, the new research member will need to provide a charge number (obtained from their professor) in order to gain access to the piece of equipment he or she has been certified on.

  • •6)        At this point the new research member that has completed the necessary training in steps 1 and 2 can continue to be trained on other equipment and develop their process using the equipment he or she gains access to.

Please visit the Process Page hosted by Linus Fetter for help with developing your research and processes.

* If you have not yet registered, you will need to do so in order to take the test and to become a Clean Room User. Please Register Here.
